Statement Regarding the Immediate Resignation of Jeffrey T. Maher, Independent Compliance Overseer for St. Paul's School

Concord, NH - Attorney General Gordon J. MacDonald releases the attached notice of resignation, effective immediately, from Jeffrey T. Maher, Independent Compliance Overseer for St. Paul's School.

Attorney General MacDonald said:

"Mr. Maher's letter raises very serious concerns.  We have already engaged St. Paul's School to immediately address the future of the Settlement Agreement and the Independent Compliance Overseer function.  We will continue our efforts to protect the welfare and safety of those entrusted to the care of St. Paul's School.

Under the Settlement Agreement, St. Paul's School proposed Mr. Maher as a qualified candidate for the position of Independent Compliance Overseer. Based on his exceptional qualifications, Mr. Maher was selected for the position.  We thank him for his hard work and dedication, particularly in the face of what had plainly become an untenable situation."

Background:

On September 13, 2018, the Attorney General's Office entered into a Settlement Agreement with St. Paul's School.  The Agreement resolved this Office's investigation into St. Paul's School without a criminal proceeding in order to facilitate the protection of children at St. Paul's School, and to ensure a system of accountability, oversight, transparency, and training at the school.

The Settlement Agreement called for the oversight of St. Paul's School for a period of up to five years and included the selection of an Independent Compliance Overseer who would be embedded on the St. Paul's School campus and tasked with reporting at least bi-annually to the Attorney General's Office regarding St. Paul's School's compliance with all of the terms of the Settlement Agreement.

On December 21, 2018, this Office announced that Jeffrey T. Maher had been selected to serve as the Independent Compliance Overseer.  Mr. Maher began serving as the Independent Compliance Overseer on February 4, 2019.
