Consumer Complaints
If you are having a problem with a business that you believe has engaged in unfair or deceptive acts or practices, you may file a complaint with the Consumer Protection and Antitrust Bureau.
- The complaint review process is not a formal legal process. However, the Bureau is frequently successful in helping consumers obtain a response or resolution to their complaints. Please understand the Bureau is a law enforcement agency that reviews complaints for possible violations of law. The Bureau cannot provide you with legal representation or advice.
Please read carefully before filing a complaint
What information you should include with your complaint:
- The Bureau requires all complaints to be submitted in writing using a consumer complaint form. Instructions for downloading/accessing the form are included below.
- When filling out the complaint form, please provide as much detail as possible. This is necessary for the Bureau to fully evaluate your complaint.
- Please include all supporting documents necessary to evaluate your complaint. For example, if your complaint involves the purchase of a vehicle, please include all paperwork provided by the dealership.
What to expect after filing a complaint:
- Your complaint will be reviewed by an attorney. If the attorney determines your complaint alleges an unfair or deceptive act or practice, we may send it to the business for review and response.
- If your complaint is sent to the business, they will be asked to address the complaint in writing. By providing the business with the opportunity to better understand your position and respond to it, consumers are often able to reach an acceptable resolution to their complaint.
- The complaint review process can take time. You will be contacted as soon as there is an update.
What not to expect after filing a complaint:
- Submitting a complaint does not guarantee a response from the business or a resolution to your complaint. If you are not satisfied with the results of the complaint review process, you should consider speaking to a private lawyer or seeking relief in small claims court. For more information on the small claims process please visit the following link: Small Claims Court | Consumer Complaints | Consumer Protection & Antitrust Bureau | NH Department of Justice
- Submitting a complaint does not guarantee that your complaint will be investigated or resolved.
- The Bureau is a law enforcement agency and cannot represent you or provide you with legal advice.
