Jeffery A. Strelzin, Senior Assistant Attorney General
Chief, Homicide Unit
New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph A. Foster and Manchester Police Chief David J. Mara, announce that an investigation is ongoing into a shooting incident that occurred in Manchester on Sunday, August 11, 2013.
At approximately 10:11 a.m., Manchester Police responded to a report of a shooting inside the YWCA building at 72 Concord Street in Manchester. After officers entered the building, they eventually discovered two deceased people inside a second floor room that is part of a supervised visitation center within the YWCA.
The two deceased people have been identified as: Joshua Savyon, age 9, of Amherst, New Hampshire, and his father, Muni Savyon, age 54, of Manchester, New Hampshire.
The investigation reveals that Muni Savyon arrived at the YWCA this morning for a 9:30 a.m. supervised visit with his son, Joshua Savyon. An adult male counselor was also present in the room with Muni and Joshua Savyon for their one-hour visitation. Partway through the visitation, Muni Savyon armed himself with a handgun and shot his son several times, killing him. Muni Savyon then turned the gun on himself and killed himself. The counselor managed to escape the room unharmed. Autopsies will be conducted tomorrow on Muni and Joshua Savyon to determine their exact cause and manner of death.
Although the investigation is still in the early stages, Manchester Police Detectives have been able to determine that Muni Savyon has been separated from his son's mother for several years. The relationship has been contentious at times and included threats by Muni Savyon to kill himself, his son's mother and their son.
The investigation is ongoing.
