Benjamin J. Agati, Assistant Attorney General
New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph A. Foster, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Robert L. Quinn, and Tilton Police Chief Robert L. Cormier, announce that Bruce Watson (age 47) was sentenced today in Belknap County Superior Court to a total of 18½ to 37 years at the New Hampshire State Prison on one count of Manslaughter and one count of Second Degree Assault, stemming from two separate assaults against Brian Wiggin in 1989, when Brian was 4 months old. The Second Degree Assault conviction related to an incident in early December 1989, when Watson recklessly twisted and broke Brian's left tibia. The Manslaughter conviction stems from an assault on December 20, 1989, which led to Brian's death on June 9, 2008, when he was 18. During the assault, Watson violently shook Brian and threw him onto a loveseat. That assault left Brian so profoundly disabled that he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair or bed. Despite his debilitating injuries, Brian’s mother provided him complete and constant care which enabled Brian to live at home until his death.
In 1991, Watson pled guilty to second degree assault for the December 20th assault and was sentenced to the State Prison for 2½ to 7 years.
