Attorney General Michael A. Delaney announced today that consumers should be aware of a door-to-door magazine subscription sales effort currently operating in the state. Consumers are warned that sales people coming to their homes may be misrepresenting themselves as neighbors and individuals working to earn money to go to college, when many of these individuals, who are employed by United Circulation, have come from out of state and may not be college students. Consumers are also warned that United Circulation charges subscription fees far in excess of the actual cost of the subscription.
Under New Hampshire's Consumer Protection Act, N.H. RSA 358-A, it is unlawful for any person to use any unfair or deceptive act or practice in the conduct of any trade or commerce within this state. A deceptive act or practice can include using deceptive representations or designations of geographic origin in connection with goods or services.
New Hampshire Law, N.H. RSA 361-B:2, also provides consumers the right to cancel any home solicitation sales transaction within three business days after the date of the transaction.
