Attorney General Michael A. Delaney and New Hampshire State Police Colonel Robert Quinn announce that Evelyn Spodnik, age 57, died earlier today at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. An autopsy will be scheduled by the Massachusetts Medical Examiner's Office to determine her cause of death. At this juncture, the Attorney General's Office is treating her death as a homicide.
The Attorney General's Office anticipates charging Barry Winters, age 60, with first degree murder for purposely causing the death of Ms. Spodnik by pouring gasoline on her and lighting her on fire. Ms. Spodnik and Mr. Winters were living together at 284 Rowentown Road, Wentworth, New Hampshire.
Mr. Winters has not been arrested for his actions because he remains in critical condition at a Boston hospital suffering from self-inflicted, severe burn injuries. The investigation into Ms. Spodnik's homicide remains open and ongoing.
