New Hampshire Attorney General Michael A. Delaney, New Hampshire State Police Colonel Robert Quinn, and Auburn Police Chief Edward G. Picard announce that Christopher Smeltzer, age 37, of Auburn has been arrested on one count of second degree murder for recklessly causing the death of his wife, Mara Pappalardo, age 39, sometime between November 7th and 8th, 2010.
Earlier today, Deputy Medical Examiner Jennie Duval performed an autopsy on Ms. Pappalardo and determined that the cause of death was blunt impact injuries to her head along with ligature strangulation. The manner of death was ruled a homicide. Dr. Duval also performed an autopsy on the son (age 4) of Mara Pappalardo and Christopher Smeltzer. Dr. Duval determined that the cause of the son's death was ligature strangulation and ruled the manner of death a homicide. The investigation into the circumstances of the son's murder remains on-going. The daughter (age 7) of Mara Pappalardo and Christopher Smeltzer was transported to the Elliot Hospital on November 8, 2010, with non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the circumstances of her injuries likewise remains on-going.
An arraignment for Christopher Smeltzer is anticipated to occur in the Candia District Court tomorrow.
