New Hampshire Attorney General Michael A. Delaney announces the arrest of Police Chief James C. Murphy, age 53, of the New Castle Police Department. Murphy was arrested for a single charge of class A felony Theft By Unauthorized Taking or Transfer, contrary to RSA 637:3.
The Theft by Unauthorized Taking or Transfer complaint alleges that between November 1, 2002 and May 30, 2006, Murphy exercised unauthorized control over the property of the Coast Guard/New Castle Police Food Drive Fund, with a purpose to deprive the Fund thereof. The total amount taken from the Fund is alleged to be approximately $8,000.00.
The Attorney General's office conducted the investigation of a complaint of funds missing from the Coast Guard/New Castle Police Food Drive Fund. Today's arrest comes after approximately six months of investigation. Murphy was arrested this morning by investigators from the Office of the Attorney General. The arrest was processed in Rye, New Hampshire, and the bail commissioner set bail in the amount of $10,000.00 personal recognizance. It is anticipated that the complaint and an affidavit in support of this arrest will be filed in Portsmouth District Court tomorrow.
