SUBJECT: Attorney General Announces New Hampshire's Participation in National Consumer Protection Week.
DATE: January 30, 2002
RELEASE TIME: Immediate

Attorney General Philip T. McLaughlin announced today that his office, led by the Consumer Protection Bureau, will be actively participating in National Consumer Protection Week, which runs from February 3 through 9, 2002. National Consumer Protection Week is designed to highlight consumer protection and education efforts around the country. The lead topic for the year 2002 is the privacy rights of consumers. The Federal Trade Commission has deemed this year's theme as "Consumer Confidential: The Privacy Story." Consumer education in this area will focus on helping consumers take precautions against the misuse of their personal information.

In addition, Attorney General McLaughlin stated that the Consumer Protection Bureau will be sponsoring a series of state-wide consumer education programs directed to high school juniors and seniors addressing consumer issues that young adults are likely to encounter. These issues include buying their first car and obtaining their first credit card. The Bureau will be making such a presentation at Merrimack High School on February 5, 2002. McLaughlin further stated that the Bureau is planning to continue these educational outreach events throughout the year as part of the Consumer Protection Bureau's efforts to heighten the awareness of young consumers. Any area high school wishing to participate in this program should contact the Consumer Protection Bureau at the Attorney General's Office.

"During National Consumer Protection Week, the Bureau will also be issuing special consumer tips in a further effort to provide the consumers of the State of New Hampshire with as much education and information they need to make smart choices in their daily lives," McLaughlin stated.

For more information about National Consumer Protection Week, consumers should visit the Federal Trade Commission's website or contact the New Hampshire Consumer Protection Bureau at 271-3641.
